How do I know if I need a mouthguard?

If your child or teen wakes up and complains to you about headaches or tooth pain, they may be experiencing bruxism, which is excessive teeth grinding. Bruxism can lead to TMJ pain and cause other dental issues down the road. If your child or teen plays a high contact sport, such as football or basketball, athletic mouthguards become important in protecting the teeth, face, and head from severe injury.

How are mouthguards made?

Pediatric mouthguards are custom-fitted for your child. Our dentist will take an impression of your child’s teeth. The impression makes sure that the mouthguard will fit comfortably and securely. Then the impression is molded over with quality material, ensuring that each athletic mouthguard or regular pediatric mouthguard can endure the pressure of teeth and impact.

How long do mouthguards take to make?

Since the mouthguards for kids and teens are custom, it may take two weeks to make. The material used and purpose of the dental mouthguard will impact the time it takes to produce a mouthguard. But their durability and comfort are worth it. When you visit our office for a dental mouthguard consultation, you will be able to discuss the process of getting a mouthguard and be provided an estimated time for how long your child’s custom mouthguard will take.
