Why is fluoride good for teeth?

Fluoride is a natural mineral that can be found in food and drinks. Fluoride can help prevent tooth decay or slow it down when topically applied to the teeth. Fluoride treatments for kids are a great way to combat tooth decay while encouraging healthy teeth and gums. Though fluoride is an effective preventive dentistry measure, it alone cannot prevent the formation of cavities.

How long does fluoride treatment take?

When your child visits our pediatric dentist for a fluoride treatment in San Antonio, you can expect the appointment to be fairly quick. Fluoride comes in the form of gel, foam, or varnish and typically is applied with a swab, brush, or tray that is held in the mouth. After the fluoride application, we encourage your child to not eat or drink for at least 30 minutes to allow their teeth to absorb the fluoride.

How often should my child get fluoride treatment?

As soon as your child’s first tooth appears, they can benefit from fluoride treatments. While the total amount of fluoride treatment will be determined by our pediatric dentist, fluoride treatments at least twice per year are recommended. Along with fluoride treatment, your child should also practice good dental habits like daily brushing and flossing.
