What does dental sedation feel like?

While nitrous oxide is commonly referred to as laughing gas, it typically does not make patients laugh out loud. Instead, it promotes happy feelings and puts the patient into a calm state of contentment. Oral conscious sedation allows the patient to enter a deeper state of relaxation, more similar to feeling very groggy and on the verge of falling asleep. General anesthesia renders patients completely unconscious, so they will likely remember very little to nothing about their visit and wake up feeling tired and ready to rest for a while.

Does dental sedation have side effects?

Side effects are usually minimal and mild, although they can occur. Patients can feel dizzy or a little queasy after using nitrous oxide, so we recommend having your child eat a light meal or snack before their visit. The effects of oral conscious sedation take longer to wear off, and patients will likely feel drowsy after their appointment, but they can also have slowed reflexes, low blood pressure, or a headache. Patients who are put under using general anesthesia may wake up feeling dizzy, nauseous, tired, or confused.

Is dental sedation safe for children?

At Tots to Teens Pediatric Dentistry, patient safety is always our highest priority. If a family requests sedation for their child or we believe a patient could benefit from dental sedation, we always review their treatment plan and medical history to determine an option that is safe for them. We will also never use dental sedation before getting a parent or guardian’s permission. If you have any questions or concerns for our team regarding dental sedation or anything else, please feel free to contact us, and our knowledgeable staff will be happy to assist you.
